If you have never had counseling before, let me share some of this process with you. First, this is a non-judgmental, safe space for you to express your thoughts and feelings. Counseling is confidential which means that I am legally and ethically required to keep any information you share with me, strictly between the two of us. There are a few limitations that will be discussed at the beginning of your session, and these are very straightforward and easily understood.

When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrified; or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity, then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathic stance… provides illumination and healing. In such situations deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another.

Typically, the first few sessions are about gathering your history, and looking at different patterns or events in your life that have played a part in your decision to seek counseling. After we’ve developed a trusting and safe space, I can inform you of strengths and areas of growth that I have observed from what you have shared. Together, we will create a treatment plan for you that helps us both stay on track to helping you reach your goals.

The length of time someone remains in counseling varies. Some people achieve their goals after as few as 6 or 8 sessions, others prefer to remain in counseling for longer periods of time. Some individuals prefer, and benefit, from weekly sessions, while others choose to have more time between sessions. We can discuss your needs during your first appointment.
